Parents are next to God for every child. Mother gives birth to a child and then both father and mother start taking caring from the moment of birth. No word can explain the love and caring of parents for their offspring. Parents always try their best to fulfill every needs of their child. They even neglect their happiness if it become a hurdle in the demand of their child. There is no scale which can measure the love and affection of parents. In the process of loving and caring, sometimes some parents start to hover overhead. They pay extremely close attention to the activities of their child. These types of parents are named as “helicopter parenting”.
Helicopter Parents are named so because helicopters also hover overhead and so these types of parents do. They oversee every aspects of their child.
The term “Helicopter Parenting” appeared for the first time in 1999 by Foster Cline and Jim Fay. Earlier the metaphor was used in 1969 in the bestselling book of Dr Haim Ginott which is “Between Parent & Teenager”. In this book he mentions a child complaining about mother that ‘Mother hovers over me like a helicopter’. The term “Helicopter Parenting” became popular and entered as a word in dictionary in 2011.
Parents whose affection are considered to be a helicopter parenting continues to advocate their child even when they become an adult or even after getting job. It means being involved in a child’s life in a way that their love turned out to be Over controlling and over protecting. Helicopter Parenting applies to parents who are responsible for their children’s inaccurate mental growth, lack of confidence because of their over concern towards their child. These parents help their child in a small work also which anyone can easily complete it. This makes their child to depend on them on every normal day to day work. Child become lazy and start losing interest to do something new in their life. They never try to show confidence in themselves to do any piece of work without the help of parents.
At the starting age; between 3-6 (toddler hood), helicopter parents constantly shadow their child. They always play with them and never leave them alone. In their child’s elementary school, helicopter parents even pay attention to the child’s friends and their activities to ensure that child is in good environment.
Now a question arises that ‘Why do parents hover?’. The answer to these questions is different in different case. Helicopter parents always worries about their child. They take control of the life of their child. They think by doing this, they can keep their child away from being hurt or being disappoint.
According to Dr Dunnewold ‘The main problem with helicopter parenting is that its backfires’. It is one of the reasons that we see decreased confidence and self-esteem in many children whose parents always hover over them. Children of the helicopter parents loses interest in many works because they knew that their parents are always ahead to help them. Helicopter parents are always there to clean up their child’s mess and also to prevent them from all their problems. Because of which their child never learns to face disappointment or failure. Studies shows that helicopter parenting make child less competing to deal with the stress of life. Child lacks the skills to deal with the normal day to day struggle.
