Chemistry helps students to pursue a career in basic sciences or professional courses. One can only understand can commit to Chemistry if he develops an interest in it. One can work on developing a positive scientific attitude and appreciate the contribution of Physics towards the improvement of the quality of human life and how it can save an innumerable amount of lives. One needs to develop problem-solving skills and needs to nurture a natural curiosity towards the subject. However, for their CBSE 12th exams students fear Chemistry a lot due to its seemingly infinite reactions and formulas. They tend to find themselves lost and worried about their memories’ commitment towards reactions and formulas in Chemistry. Given below are 5 tips for understanding & committing to memory Chemistry reactions & formulas for CBSE 12th exams:
- Memorize the structures
Organic chemistry is like a jungle which scares students away because it contains so many compounds. But what they forget is that they can always arrange these compounds into different categories, based on the structure which makes it easier to understand and memorize. We all know that structures give properties to a compound and tells the possibility of a reaction.
- Practice the problems
To understand and commit the Chemistry reactions and formulas keep practising problems and reactions. If you don’t practice frequently, results may turn out to be ugly in your board examinations. Try to attempt all of the questions in NCERT, reference books, and previous years’ question. This will help you to solidify formulas and reactions, in turn developing an understanding for the same.
- Keep acid-base reactions in mind
More than half of Organic Chemistry is based upon acid-base reactions. You may call them Nucleophile and Electrophile, keep their reactions in mind and 90% of Organic chemistry will be a piece of cake for you. The Lewis Concept of Acids teaches a very important concept, that being the ability to predict where the charge would be more stable. It is very crucial as in any reaction, the ultimate goal of the molecule is to become stable. If one develops the ability to predict the stability of the charge then it would be easier to predict the direction the charge will take and the ultimate result.
- Chemistry is about understanding, not memorizing
Chemistry is not the kind of subjects which should be memorized, it would be impossible for a student to score well by solely relying on memorizing. It is also the go-to method for people who have not planned and have to cram everything bite-sized, just immediately before examinations. There are certainly some parts of Chemistry which require memorization such as nomenclature, reagent names and acronyms, functional groups, and so on. While some students might grasp the topics in a few weeks, others may have to resort to memory-centric devices like flashcards etc.
- Revise with your peers
Revising with your peers won’t do any harm, rather it will help you greatly. It will help a student to grasp the Chemistry concepts more effectively and help in memory retention. There is no harm in clearing doubts of peers and in the same way, there isn’t any harm in getting doubts cleared out by friends. Getting together to achieve a common goal is a really good idea.
